Jones Weatherproofing carried out critical weatherproofing work at a new film and TV facility near Reading. The project focussed on ensuring the building penetrations, which accommodate ductwork, pipes and cabling, were protected from rainwater ingress and wind damage, ensuring long-term weather protection for this state-of-the-art facility.

Jones Weatherproofing navigated a range of logistical and on-site challenges, coordinating with other contractors to ensure the weatherproofing work of the film studio fit within the build’s scheduling constraints and tight deadlines. The result was the high-quality, professional finish that has become synonymous with Jones Weatherproofing.

Film studios weatherproofing is a critical consideration

The new film studio is set to become a major hub for the UK film industry. Spanning more than a million square feet, this landmark development involved transforming a greenfield site into a state-of-the-art complex with 18 new sound stages, as well as offices, workshops and other buildings.

For film studios, weatherproofing is a critical consideration. The buildings house sensitive, high-value equipment such as cameras, microphones and computers, as well as intricate film sets and props. They also must provide a safe, controlled environment for cast and crew. Weatherproofing protects the significant financial investments involved in film productions, helping to avoid serious consequences ranging from water damage to filming disruptions.

Jones Weatherproofing’s joint managing director, Steve Jones, explains: “We were selected to weatherproof the building penetrations thanks to our experience weatherproofing complex projects, along with our reputation for taking a collaborative approach to each project. Our clients know that we will work hard to get projects completed to a high quality and within even the tightest of schedules.”

With so much happening on site, Jones Weatherproofing had to plan the project carefully to avoid disruption with other trades while also ensuring the weatherproofing was carried out effectively and efficiently, especially considering the fast-paced schedule of the studio’s construction.

“This project was fast paced from the start, with phase one taking just eight months to complete. Flexibility was extremely important during this time,” says Steve Jones. “We had to adjust our schedule often to prevent disruption to other contractors, all while maintaining the high level of workmanship that our reputation is based on.”

The challenges became even more complex as the project continued. During the later stages of the build, the on-site team even had to work around filming that had started at the studio. Ghostbusters was filmed on one of the completed sound stages while hundreds of contractors continued work on the surrounding structures.

“Carrying out weatherproofing activities around a live filming environment added another layer of complexity,” Steve explains. “It required meticulous planning and close collaboration with all parties involved to ensure we could do our work without impacting the studio’s operations or the other contractors who were still on site.”
